Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens, better known as Queen Latifah in the United States is a rapper and actress. Her work as Queen Latifah in film, television as well as music has earned many awards. They include the Golden Globe Award two Screen Actors Guild Awards Two Image Awards A Grammy Award Additional Grammy Nominations An Emmy Award Nomination and an Academy Award. Queen Latifah's parents are Lancelot and Rita Owens. Both were members of the police force. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher, who was a teacher in Irvington High School. Latifahs parents split up when Latifah, then ten years was ten years old. Latifah, who was born and raised within Newark New Jersey attended Catholic school in Newark. Latifah can be described as an Arabic term that translates to "delicate and gentle". Her cousin gave it to her at the age of eight. Latifah, a 5'10" tall power forward for her high school team was always tall. In a school production, she performed the song Home from The Wiz. Latifah was a beatboxer in her band, the Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah is one of the founding members of Flavor Unit, which was at the time a group composed of MCs led by DJ Mark the45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the45King) recorded a demo of Queen Latifah rapper Princess of the Posse. He sent the recording to Yo! MTV Raps which is hosted by Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was interested by the tune. The singer signed Latifah, and released her debut track Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
